This presentation will examine the recent trend toward steel-timber hybrids – as a subset of the wider trend toward mass timber – in high rise buildings.

It will overview where this is happening, and what the advantages and challenges are, focusing on some of the key case studies employing such systems.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the global trend toward timber and timber-hybrid buildings in terms of predominant geography, building function, building height, and other factors.
  • Appreciate why, and under what circumstances, steel and timber are being used in hybrid action.
  • Examine how they are being used, i.e., the myriad different hybrid arrangements of steel and timber.
  • Evaluate real technical implementations of steel-timber hybrid systems from around the world, through built case studies.

Pre-Requisite: Basic understanding of steel, timber and commercial construction.
